The location of Atlanta, Michigan greatly influences the census-designated place in Montmorency County. Atlanta is on the 45th parallel, which marks the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole. As the “Elk Capital of Michigan” since 1986, Atlanta is a true outdoor paradise.
RECREATION
With heavily wooded forests and 11 area lakes surrounding; Atlanta has become a Northern Michigan vacation and weekend destination. There are approximately 1,000 square miles of land, lakes and streams available for camping, fishing, swimming, hunting, skiing and more.
Clear Lake State Park is a 290-acre, secluded retreat located within Mackinaw State Forest. The park features 200 campsites, a boat ramp, playgrounds and picnic areas. Challenges for golfers of all skill levels, amidst natural Northern Michigan beauty, are provided by Garland Lodge & Golf Resort, Thunder Bay Resort and Elk Ridge Golf Club. The Thunder Bay River runs through Atlanta flowing into Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
The last weekend of September is when the annual Elk Festival takes place. The festival includes a parade, talent show, live auction, games, food and entertainment. The Sno*Drift Rally happens each January and has become a premier international race sponsored by Rally America. The race on snow and ice covered roads through Montmorency County attracts drivers from all over the world.
